Fodors.com

A favorite for the comfortable rooms and convenient midtown location, the Casablanca is inspired by the sultry Mediterranean. On the second floor, music plays while guests linger in the spacious library-like Rick’s Café for complimentary continental breakfast and wine-and-cheese evenings.

YOU SHOULD KNOW While the location is convenient for exploring midtown, it also receives heavy tourist foot traffic and can be crowded.

room

Soundproofed rooms limit noise from nearby Times Square. Classic in style, rooms have wood furniture and neutral wallpaper plus free bottled water and free Wi-Fi. Complimentary coffeemakers are available by request. At 225 to 275 square feet, the rooms are a bit tight on space (though mini-suites with extra square footage are available).

Mini-suites have the addition of a sofa-bed and are a good option for families.

lobby

The lobby is outfitted with mirrors and mosaics, wooden blinds, and dainty little bistro tables—it’s all rather theatrical, but then again, so is the neighborhood.

dining

Rick’s Café is the hotel’s club room, complete with a fireplace and complimentary food and drink, including a free continental breakfast and evening wine and cheese reception. Tony’s di Napoli, dating back to 1959, is a classic Italian restaurant with big portions that are designed to share family style.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Located on West 43rd Street between 6th Avenue and Broadway, this hotel is in the thick of the Times Square and Theater District action. Subway service is excellent, with multiple train line options including the 1, 2, and 3 trains at Times Square/42nd Street, the N, Q, R, and W trains at Times Square/42nd Street, and the B, D, F, and M trains at Bryant Park/42nd Street. Taxis and Uber are widely available in the neighborhood. Traffic is a problem, as usual.

Restaurants

Osteria Al Doge (3-minute walk) is a cozy Italian restaurant serving classics like spaghetti alle vongole and lasagna Bolognese. Since the 1970s, Café Un Deux Trois (3-minute walk) has been reliably serving bistro classics including omelettes, crepes, and steak frites. Spicy food fans will be drawn to Xi’an Famous Foods (7-minute walk), a popular noodle shop; try the spicy cumin lamb hand-ripped noodles.

Bars

Lantern’s Keep (5-minute walk) is an old school cocktail lounge that provides a peaceful atmosphere along with finely mixed drinks. The Long Room (3-minute walk) is a relaxed pub with more than a dozen beers on draught.

WHY WE LIKE IT

With a free daily wine and cheese evening, this hotel encourages mingling between guests. In addition to the convivial vibe, we love the convenient location for Broadway theater and the cozy atmosphere in Rick’s Café, complete with a fireplace.
