Fodor's Expert Review Baccarat Hotel & Residences

28 W. 53rd St., New York, New York 10019, USA See on Map

This polished property provides pure luxury at every corner, from the glamorous salon and bar where all the drinks are served in Baccarat crystal to the emphasis on service. The price is steep, but rooms are generous in size, the indoor heated pool is a serene retreat, and speedy room service is excellent. Plan on spending some time in the lavish room—this hotel will make you feel like a million bucks.

YOU SHOULD KNOW All of this luxury doesn’t come cheap—even by New York standards, this property is pricey.

room

Every detail in the decadent rooms from the linens to the towels to the Baccarat glassware in the red lacquer minibar is pristine and of top quality. Inspired by Parisian residences, rooms have fresh red roses, gigantic windows, and crystal wall sconces. So very pretty!

With rooms starting at a generous 401-square-feet (double the size of some Manhattan hotel rooms!), guests won’t need to upgrade beyond the entry level for space reasons.

bathroom

White marble bathrooms have walk-in showers with enormous rainfall showerheads, plus soft Italian robes and bath products from Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris.

lobby

A discreet ground floor entrance leads to a hallway with an elevator that brings guests up to the lobby. A small front desk area opens to the Petit Salon, a peaceful parlor with crystal chandeliers, plush couches, and clusters of seating.

pool

The indoor heated pool has a checkered floor and is surrounded by comfy daybeds and a hot tub. It's very lavish. Guests looking for extra relaxation may want to check out the on-site spa, with four treatment rooms. Go ahead--treat yourself. You deserve it.

dining

The Grand Salon is an extravagant living room, full of fresh red roses, crystal chandeliers, and lots of chairs, tables, and couches for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, cocktails, or dinner. The multi-functional space has large, lovely windows and parquet floors. The French-accented menu includes housemade croissants by morning and cheese and charcuterie boards by evening.

drinking

The barrel-vaulted bar is an intimate space located off the Grand Salon with crystal chandeliers, a 60-foot-long bar, and plush banquettes. All drinks are served in (once again) Baccarat crystal. Seriously, they really love Baccarat crystal at this place. An outdoor terrace with a fireplace provides extra space.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Located on West 53rd Street between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue, this hotel is in a convenient spot for exploring the landmarks of midtown Manhattan and shopping along 5th Avenue. Subway access is nearby with the E and M trains at 5th Avenue/53rd Street, plus the B and D trains at 7th Avenue/53rd Street. Taxis and Uber are widely available in the neighborhood but traffic congestion (as always) can be a problem.

Restaurants

The Modern (2-minute walk) is a Michelin-rated restaurant overlooking the sculpture garden of the Museum of Modern Art. Chef Eric Ripert focuses on seafood at the elegant Le Bernardin (7-minute walk), one of Manhattan’s classic fine-dining experiences. For a taste of Scandinavia in New York, make a reservation for a tasting menu at Aquavit (7-minute walk).

Bars

Set within the historic St. Regis hotel, the King Cole Bar (4-minute walk) is one of New York’s most glamorous watering holes. Morrell Wine Bar (9-minute walk) has over 150 wines available by the glass; a seasonal patio provides extra space to chill out and drink.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Visions of a luxurious Parisian apartment come to life in this hotel, where all the glasses are Baccarat crystal (seriously, all of them) and warm croissants are only a phone call to room service away. We love the peaceful indoor pool, the lavish Grand Salon, and the atmosphere of the low-lit bar.
