Fahnestock Winter Park. Nearly 10 miles of groomed trails vein the meadows, woodlands, and snowed-over lake of Fahnestock Winter Park, part of Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park. Old pasture lanes weave through hemlock and hardwood groves, passing old stone walls and granite outcroppings. Come with your own gear or rent skis, boots, and poles on-site ($16 a day). Trail passes are $9. The park, open weekdays 10–4 and weekends 9–4:30, also rents skate skis and snowshoes, as well as inner tubes for use on the groomed sledding hill. Call ahead to check weather conditions, and for information about lessons and ski clinics. You can warm up with hot food and drinks in the park's lodge and café. 1498 Rte. 301, Carmel, New York, 10512. 845/225–3998; parks.ny.gov.
