Fodor's Expert Review La Dona Luz Inn

114C Kit Carson Rd., Taos, New Mexico, 87571, USA

Paul "Paco" Castillo, who hails from a long line of local Taos artists and curio-shop owners, runs this festive and friendly B&B just a block off of Kit Carson Road and a few minutes' stroll from the plaza. It's one of the best bargains in the neighborhood, and rooms in this 19th-century adobe structure with latilla-and-viga ceilings are decorated with art and antiques from New Mexico, Mexico, and Spain—many have Jacuzzi tubs. The quirkiest and coziest room is also one of the least expensive—it's hidden up a spiral staircase and has low ceilings, but there's a nice view of Wheeler Peak to the east.

PROS

  • affordable rooms
  • a short walk from the plaza
  • fun, local artwork throughout

CONS

  • in a busy and slightly noisy area (especially in summer)
