Top Reasons to Go to Great Basin National Park
- Ancient trees: The twisting, windswept bristlecone pines in Great Basin can live to be thousands of years old.
- Desert skyscraper: Wheeler Peak rises out of the desert basin with summit temperatures often 20–30 degrees below that of the visitor center.
- Rare shields: Look for hundreds of these unique disk-shape formations inside Lehman Caves.
- Gather your pine nuts while you may: Come in the fall and go a little nutty, as you can gather up to three gunnysacks of pinyon pine nuts, found in abundance throughout the park. They're great on salads.
- Celestial show: Pitch-dark nights make for dazzling stars. Gaze on your own or attend a seasonal nighttime talk, led by a park ranger.
