Fodor's Expert Review Izaak Walton Inn
290 Izaak Walton Inn Rd., Essex, Montana, 59916, USA
Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.
This historic lodge just south of Glacier National Park is popular with railway buffs: not only was it originally built to house rail workers (and has the industry memorabilia decor to prove it), but its lodging options include refurbished train cars, cabooses, and even a locomotive in addition to classic lodge rooms and family cabins. Accommodations have no TVs, but there is one in the bar and lounge area. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in common areas, though the signal isn't always strong. The inn's restaurant, designed to look like an old-fashioned dining car, serves excellent Montana-style dishes such as steaks, elk burgers, pan-seared Montana trout, and huckleberry cobbler. You can ride Amtrak to the back door, and in winter you can step right outside to cross-country ski or snowshoe. This property was closed for renovations for more than a year beginning April 1, 2023.
PROS
- good location between East and West Glacier
- Amtrak station right beside the inn
- fun railway theme
CONS
- train noise can be a problem
- no phones or TVs in rooms
- no cell reception and Wi-Fi signal is weak
