Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge

Locals call it the CMR, and it's a stunning place to visit in the summer, when the weather is stable (and sometimes really hot). It's teeming with birds and wildlife, and the remote nature of the Breaks makes the endless prairies, deep canyons, and remote timbered ridges great places for day hiking and backcountry exploration. Bring good boots, sunscreen, and insect repellent. You are unlikely to see other people besides local ranchers out checking fences and cattle. At the center of it all is Fort Peck Lake, a world-class fishery, where big specimens of many species are catchable right from shore. Keep in mind that much of the CMR is remote and the weather can change quickly, so plan ahead and keep your gas tank topped up.

Approximately 4 miles north of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge (and 50 miles south of Malta) is the Buffalo Camp for the American Prairie Reserve, which is in close proximity to a large prairie dog town.
