At what is still an active shipyard, this museum chronicles over 300 years of wooden shipbuilding. Essex launched approximately 400 vessels, most of them two-masted fishing schooners for the Gloucester fleet. The museum offers shipbuilding demonstrations, events, and self- and fully guided tours. The collection includes ship models on loan from the Smithsonian, as well as the 83-foot Evelina M. Goulart—one of only seven remaining Essex-built schooners.
