Ship's Knees Inn

186 Beach Rd., Orleans, Massachusetts 02653, USA

Kim MacKinnon

Giving a generous nod to its name and its 19th-century heritage, this 17-room inn, set on 1.5 acres, is full of nautical and historic touches: seaside artwork and furnishings, steeply pitched roof lines, wide-plank floors, antiques, and a good deal of painted furniture. Sleep with your windows open and you'll likely hear the waves of nearby Nauset Beach, a five-minute walk from the inn. Have morning repast inside the homey pine-paneled breakfast room, outdoors on the stone patio or by the lovely in-ground pool. The inn is open from April through January 2nd, a much longer season than many on the Cape.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Kids must be age 12 and up.

room

Rooms are spread out among three attached buildings: the main house; the North Wing (a former barn and bunk house); and in a later addition to the house. All are unique in size and décor, but have a nautical theme and original art. All feature premium linens, Wi-Fi, refrigerators and air conditioning. Some rooms also have working fireplaces, private entrances and ocean views.

The Ocean View apartment is aptly named, with great views, plus a full kitchen, a living/dining room area, a working fireplace and a private deck.

lobby

A common living room area with rocking chairs, a couch and books, is one spot for guests to relax, but the pool during the day and the firepit at night are by far the most popular spots to hang out.

Restaurants

The Nauset Beach Club (2-minute drive) offers tasty Italian fare. Arnold’s Lobster & Clam Bar (13-minute drive) is a classic Cape Cod seafood spot, with fresh seafood (much of it fried, of course), plus mini-golf and ice cream. For a fine dining experience, ABBA (8-minute drive) is one of the nicest restaurants on the Cape, serving dishes like poached lobster, duck breast with gnocchi and pan-seared salmon, in a lovely setting.

Bars

The Tavern at the Fairway Restaurant (14-minute drive) is a casual place to get a drink. Local Break Restaurant & Bar (15-minute drive) prides itself on its creative cocktails, homemade sangria and large selection of local beer.

WHY WE LIKE IT

This classic Cape Cod inn offers lots of perks for travelers, not the least of which is its proximity to gorgeous Nauset Beach. But amenities like the large in-ground pool, landscaped grounds with hammocks and lounge chairs and a firepit which becomes a central point for guests in the evening, are definite upgrades to the typical small inn. Guests can borrow beach chairs, towels and umbrellas, and the owners thoughtfully allow guests to arrive and park before check-in for extra beach time, just one of the touches that make guests feel welcome.
