The Inn at Longwood Medical is a family-friendly mainstay for folks who are looking to stay directly in the Longwood Medical area, home to institutions like Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Joslin Diabetes Center, and Boston Children's Hospital. It's big with parents visiting the neighboring schools, like Simmons College and Wentworth Institute of Technology, as well as bigger institutions like Northeastern University and Boston University.
If you're a patient or a relative of a patient at one of the area's many hospitals, check into the discounted medical rate. The same goes for those visiting some of the larger area universities.
For the most part, rooms are cookie cutter, but nicely appointed with desks and updated linens. They have 32" LCD TV's, a work desk with an ergonomic rolling chair, Keurig coffeemakers, and pillowtop mattresses. Suites have bigger TV's, a table and chairs, as well as a wet bar with a refrigerator and microwave.
Bathrooms are also cookie cutter, but fine if you're just looking for something clean and useful. Suites have oversized vanities with upgraded amenities.
The lobby is subdued and professional, but can get a little rowdier during baseball season when Sox fans flood the halls and lobby. You'll also notice there's an adjacent CVS pharmacy.
While you're in the lobby, ask about its ticket packages for Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and Boston Celtics games and for the Museum of Fine Arts.
Longwood Grille + Bar is a family restaurant where kids eat free lunch and dinner with a paying adult. There's also a food court that's adjacent to the hotel, with fast food favorites like Sbarro, McDonald's, Subway and Dunkin Donuts.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The restaurant has plenty of gluten-free options. Also, ask about the discount for guests of the hotel.
The Inn at Longwood Medical is just a short walk from the Longwood MBTA stop on the Green Line. For travelers going to and from Logan International Airport and Amtrak stations, Go Boston Shuttle Service has special rates for guests.
For families looking for a quick bite, there's a Bertucci's (2-minute walk) right around the corner. If you walk a bit more into the Fenway neighborhood, you'll find tons of options, like barbecue hotspot Sweet Cheeks Q (11-minute walk), Saloniki Greek (12-minute walk), an excellent fast-casual Greek spot, and the magical Blackbird Doughtnuts Fenway (12-minute walk).
There's not a ton of watering holes in the Longwood neighborhood, but if you're willing to walk into the Fenway, there's plenty of spots. Stroll over to the Yard House (14 minute walk) or The Baseball Tavern (16 minute walk), or if you're looking for a top-of-the-line craft cocktail, continue into Kenmore Square to visit Eastern Standard (20 minute walk, 6 minute drive) or The Hawthorne (20 minute walk, 6 minute drive).
WHY WE LIKE IT
In the winter, parking is sometimes free, so check ahead. Extremely hospitable to families coming into the area for medical treatment, the Inn provides every child under the age of 12 with a Teddy Bear mascot named Hope.
