Boston may be called Beantown, but Freeport could easily lay claim to the moniker: L.L. Bean put the town on visitors' radar. The company's flagship store and impressive campus dominate Main Street, and a plethora of outlets and specialty stores edge both the main drag and nearby streets. But those who visit Freeport only to shop are missing out.
Lovely old clapboard houses line the town's shady backstreets, and, a few miles away, South Freeport's pretty harbor sits on the Harraseeket River. In addition, the area's nature preserves have miles of walking trails.
