Fodor's Expert Review Portland Harbor Museum
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Immerse yourself in Portland's maritime history at this thoughtfully executed museum. An exhibit features Rosie the Riveter types, women who went to work as mechanics, crane operators, and electricians in the Portland shipyard during World War II. Another exhibit is devoted to the steamship known as New England's Titanic, which sank in an 1898 storm, taking 175 people with it. You'll also find vintage postcards depicting coastal scenes, with their inscriptions transcribed on the wall, photography by local artists, model ships, historical maps, and marine artifacts.
