Fodor's Expert Review Sheraton New Orleans Hotel

500 Canal St., New Orleans, Louisiana 70130, USA See on Map

Cameron Todd

This Goliath of a chain hotel has a whopping 1,110 guest rooms overlooking a busy section of Canal Street. Guests enjoy modern comforts and amenities, with extra perks for those staying in a club level room. Catering mostly to convention goers, business travelers can delight in the rooftop pool and large, 24/7 access gym in their downtime.

From Canal Street, guests can pull in to the wide port cochere and park in the hotel's own covered garage.

All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the city and river. Club rooms on the 42-49th floors enjoy access to the private lounge and its complimentary continental breakfast and evening hors d'oeuvres.

This hotel is dog friendly! Sheraton's signature pet beds are available upon request.

Bathrooms are marble and granite with modern amenities and signature bath products.

The cavernous, bustling lobby feels more like the lower floor of a mall, with a Starbucks and escalators to the left and signs directing various conferences to their respective meeting rooms everywhere. In the lobby's center, you'll find a breezy circular bar, and beyond the fountain (read: shopping mall), a grand piano, and seating looking out onto Canal Street.

From the Canal Street windows, view the hotel's display of 1950s photography, street portraits that focus mostly on the nostalgic days of the hotel's surrounding blocks.

Soaring above the city, you'll find the small rooftop pool and hot tub. The deck area has plenty of lounge chairs, and a covered section for respite from the sun.

In a large dance studio, the fitness center is quite serious, with a dozen cardio machines, yoga mats, and weight training equipment.

On the second floor mezzanine, Roux Bistro showcases familiar New Orleans flavors in their interpretations of Creole classics.

The Pelican Bar in the lobby is a good place to meet with friends, read, or people-watch the crowds on Canal Street.

Getting Around

The Canal Street streetcar stops in front of the hotel. It's easy to travel on foot throughout the CBD and French Quarter.

At Palace Cafe across the street (1-minute walk), people-watch while eating beignets and other brunch indulgences, or head to Merchant (6-minute walk) for gourmet coffee, crepes, and panini. Gourmet, thin crust pizzas at Domenica (6-minute walk) are half-off every happy hour.

For those craving a divey sports bar, Cajun Mike's Pub (6-minute walk) will do the trick. Opposite the pub in the Roosevelt Hotel, you'll find Sazerac Bar, a dark, romantic atmosphere ideal for date nights and classic New Orleans cocktails.

Like many hotels in the area, this Sheraton caters to conferences and business stays. In general, though, guests looking for a central stay with a touch of luxury will also find it accommodating.
