The streetcar. Take a scenic and leisurely streetcar ride from Canal Street to Audubon Park, ogling the stately mansions that stretch along St. Charles Avenue.

Audubon Park and Zoo. Considered one of the best in the nation, Audubon Zoo offers a wide range of interesting exhibits for visitors of all ages. The adjoining park has beautiful walking trails lined with 100-year-old oaks.

Carrollton-Riverbend. This bustling neighborhood along Oak Street, Maple Street, and South Carrollton Avenue has restaurants, shops, and popular hangouts for college students and locals.

Shopping. Magazine Street is the city's premier shopping destination.

Getting Here and Around

Uptown and Carrollton-Riverbend are easily walkable neighborhoods. The St. Charles Avenue streetcar is a reliable and picturesque mode of transportation. It runs approximately every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day (less frequently nights and weekends), from Canal Street at the edge of the French Quarter to South Claiborne Avenue. It stops at all main intersections across St. Charles Avenue, leaving you within walking distance of Audubon Park and Zoo. Expect the entire ride, from Canal Street to Carrollton-Riverbend, to take about an hour (longer during rush hour or on holidays or weekends). Visit the RTA’s website (www.norta.com) for updates. The No. 11 bus runs the length of Magazine Street up to Audubon Park from Canal Street. It runs every 20 minutes, making stops at five major intersections. The fare is $1.25 for both the streetcar and the bus.

Making the Most of Your Time

You could easily spend two days in this neighborhood: a full day visiting the Audubon Zoo and enjoying the park that surrounds it, and another day exploring the boutiques, galleries, and restaurants along Magazine Street.

Safety

Most of Uptown and Carrollton-Riverbend is safe to walk around during the day and evening. However, take extra care when walking at night in the area between Magazine Street and the river up to Jefferson. Also avoid the area close to the river west of Audubon Park and dark side streets when out late at night.
