Chess Champions

Frances Parkinson Keyes's historical novel The Chess Players is based on the life of Paul Morphy, a New Orleanian considered to be one of the greatest modern chess masters. The Beauregard-Keyes House was originally built for Morphy's grandfather. If you're interested in challenging a living chess master, stop by Jude Acers's sidewalk table outside the Gazebo Cafe on Decatur Street. A two-time world-record holder for simultaneous games, Acers is at his table most days and takes on any challenger for a small fee.
