Fodor's Expert Review Puu o Mahuka Heiau
The North Shore
Religious Building/Site/Shrine
Worth a stop for its spectacular views from a bluff high above the ocean overlooking Waimea Bay, this sacred spot is the largest heiau on the island and spans nearly 2 acres. At one time it was used as a heiau luakini, or a temple for human sacrifices. It's now on the National Register of Historic Places. Turn up the road at the Pupukea Foodland and follow the road up to the heiau.
