Fodor's Expert Review Shokudo Japanese Restaurant & Bar

$$ Ala Moana Japanese

With a soaring ceiling, crazy red mobile sculpture, contemporary Japanese grazing plates, fruity vodka "sodas," and hungry young people, Shokudo is a culinary house of fun. Whether you go for new-wave fusion dishes such as sushi pizza (a flat, baked square of rice topped with salmon, scallop, crab, and pickled jalapeño), or more traditional noodle bowls and sushi, the food is all good. Do get the signature honey toast for dessert—a hollowed-out loaf of Japanese sandwich bread stuffed with cubes of its toasted innards and vanilla ice cream that's drizzled with honey. Shokudo is one of Honolulu's few late-night eateries that is not a fast-food joint. Last orders on Friday and Saturday are taken at 1 am.
