Fodor's Expert Review Hale Vietnam
One of Oahu's first Vietnamese restaurants, this neighborhood spot, initially popular with budget-minded college kids, expresses its friendly character with its name: hale (hah-lay) is the Hawaiian word for house or home. As Kaimuki has gentrifed, Hale Vietnam has remained an anchor spot, albeit with prices that reflect the changing times. You'll find the region's expected staples—think green-papaya salad, summer rolls, pho, and bun. If you're not sure what to order, just ask; the staff are known for their willingness to help those who don't know much about Vietnamese food. Neighborhood locals swear it's the best pho on the island, and the imperial rolls are tough to beat. Reservations are taken for larger groups only.
