Fodor's Expert Review Cholo's Homestyle Mexican
There are a few institutions on the North Shore that are the area's great gathering places. Foodland (the great grocery store) is one, and the other is Cholo's. Festively done up with Mexican tchotchkes, this longtime spot serves up decent rice-and-beans plates of Mexican standards (steak fajitas, burritos, enchiladas) at affordable prices. Fish tacos are made with sashimi-grade ahi—caught just offshore and brought in from Haleiwa Pier. Even the margaritas are made with locally sourced fruit. (You won't find a sweeter fresh mango margarita anywhere.) Early birds should check out the morning menu; the restaurant opens at 9:30 am and serves different variations of the breakfast burrito. Nobody comes to Hawaii for fabulous Mexican food, but Cholo's is worth it for the North Shore vibe and drinks alone. And fish tacos made with sashimi-grade ahi (ono).
