Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Renew

129 Paoakalani Ave., Honolulu, Hawaii, 96815, USA

Located a block from world-famous Waikiki Beach, this 72-room boutique hotel managed by Aston Hotels & Resorts is a casual but chic change from the big resorts that dominate the oceanfront here. It has all the modern amenities you'll need, including Wi-Fi, mobile concierge service, daily Continental breakfast, in-room Keurig coffeemakers, PlayStations, beach gear, and a daily happy hour in the lobby lounge. Billed as \"urban chic,\" the property touts itself as a place to relax and renew. It's even dog-friendly ($25 per night, plus tax).

If your dates are flexible, you can save a lot of money by choosing the lower cost dates that are displayed on the website’s calendar search. On the more off-season dates the best rooms can be snatched up at very affordable rates, though you’ll need to book directly.

room

Guests can choose between ocean view and city view rooms, with either king or two full beds (there’s also an option for one full bed). Each room has been styled with Asian decor in mind, all very clean, with dark woods and soft lighting. Each room has a Keurig coffee maker, mini-fridge, and free Wi-Fi.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Rooms that are closer to Tiki’s Grill & Bar next door will hear music and noise until it shuts down every night, but that’s the price you’ll pay for a lovely ocean view.

bathroom

The bathrooms are a bit small, but some creative uses of shelving help to open the space up a bit. Bathroom layouts differ based on the rooms, but contemporary fixtures and new tiling makes them all have a fresh look.

lobby

The hotel lobby is relatively small, but stylishly decorated with a dark furnishing and accents and rock wall backdrop behind the reception desk and a comfy bench couch in a small lounging area. There’s also a really nice water feature with fish that makes guests smile. The added extra touch of being greeted with pineapple juice and cold lemongrass scented towels is a nice way to be welcomed and start your vacation.

spa

Though the hotel doesn’t have its own spa, guests receive a $20 credit at Island Club and Spa.

dining

There is no on-site dining, but there is a free continental breakfast daily from 7 to 9 a.m.

drinking

The lobby bar (Lounge Renew) is intimate and relaxing, with bench and chair seating, as well as a few bar seats. It’s a nice way to start the night, with happy hour from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., though the bar closes a bit early at 10 p.m. A board game and book library for guests is a nice treat.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Waikiki and surrounding areas are easily reachable from the airport by cab or rideshare. There is plenty to do in these areas without ever leaving (walking, biking, taking the bus, or hailing a car), so a rental car is only necessary if you want to explore other parts of the island.

Restaurants

Venture outside of your ramen comfort zone at Agu Ramen (9-min drive) by adding their signature “hot mess” – a heavy dose of parmesan – to your bowl. No really, it works! Their offerings include classic ramen bowls, options for vegans and vegetarians, and a ridiculously unctuous curry that will have you thinking about it for days. They also have a great happy hour at their multiple locations that includes 50% off appetizers and draft beers.

Without exaggeration, you will likely have the best omelet of your life at The Original Pancake House (28-min drive). Fluffy, huge, and stuffed with some unique items, they’re nothing if not memorable – and so is the décor. This strip mall offering sees Europe meet the Pacific at this German-styled restaurant with Portland roots and Hawaiian favorites like Spam and eggs and macadamia nut pancakes on the menu. They also brew up a damn fine cup of coffee.

Bars

Even if you’re not staying at The Modern, you’ll want to sneak behind the bookcases in their lobby to grab a drink at The Study (11-min drive). It may look small from the outside, but this bar with yummy cocktails, incredible live music that gives way to a DJ, and diverse crowd is large and inviting. Alas, you will definitely not get any studying done.

Though MAC 24/7 (4-min walk) is definitely a great place to grab a meal, especially breakfast, it’s their cocktails that we really love. Last call is at 3:30 a.m., so you can enjoy a nightcap with your late-night pancakes before heading back to your hotel. Fruity cocktails like the Frozen Mo’o and Lava Lava Rocks fill that island cocktails craving. They also have a great reverse happy hour from midnight to 3 a.m. (except Friday and Saturday), as well as a regular daily happy hour from 2 to 5 p.m.

WHY WE LIKE IT

While you wouldn’t expect a dark, chic hotel to be a favorite for a beach hotel, the beauty and simplicity of Hotel Renew make it feel like a relaxing, posh hotel. The little extras like beach supplies, book library, and free breakfast, plus a place to grab a drink all make for a nice little getaway from your time away from the beach. It’s also nice that some of the rooms are dog-friendly (additional fee).
