Fodor's Expert Review Wailea Ekahi Village

3300 Wailea Alanui Dr., Wailea, Hawaii, 96753, USA See on Map

Overlooking Keawakapu Beach, this family-friendly vacation resort features studios and one- and two-bedroom suites in low-rise buildings that span 34 acres of tropical gardens and won't cost your child's entire college fund. Amenities include four swimming pools, paddle tennis, shuffleboard, and barbecue areas. A covered beachfront pavilion near the private beach entrance to Keawakapu Beach offers convenient access to bathroom facilities, plus a full kitchen with an ice maker, a cold water dispenser, refrigerator, microwave, stove, and oven, which allows you to plan a day of picnicking without having to go back to your condo suite.

YOU SHOULD KNOW This property is pretty massive at 34 acres. It can take as long as 10 minutes to walk to the beach and oceanfront pool from the furthest units.

Condo options include studio, one-, and two-bedroom residences for guests to choose from. Each unit differs in furnishings and decor, as each are individually owned, but the website does a nice job of letting guests get a good view of each unit online. Each unit includes air conditioning, full kitchen, washer/dryer, free Wi-Fi, and ocean views.

A lot of the furnishings and linens at this property look quite dated, but there are some units that have a more modern look, if that’s important to you. Keep digging through the website to make sure you find the one that is right for you.

Some bathrooms have tub/shower combos, while others have standing showers. They aren’t particularly large, though the vanities are a nice size.

The lobby is small and all business. There are no frills or places for guests to lounge and relax.

The property includes four swimming pools, including the large, and very popular, beachfront pool. With expansive views of the ocean, it’s no wonder this pool is better suited to fun and socializing than it is to calm relaxation.

There is no fitness center, but there is a tennis court and shuffleboard, in case guests want to get some activity in.

Getting Around

It’s easy (and preferable) to explore Maui’s smaller towns by foot, but to get to them and around the island, you’ll need to rent a car. If you plan on exploring the Road to Hana, get something with a little extra horsepower (but not too big as the road can get very narrow). Free self parking is available. There is also a free Wailea shuttle service provided that just happens to be a Tesla X.

Find fresh, vibrant food at Fork and Salad (11-min drive), featuring signature, as well as build-your-own salads, grain bowls, and sandwiches made with a wide variety of mostly local and organic ingredients. These healthy options make a great choice to pick up for a beach picnic or day of hiking.

Find casual, beachy fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Beach Bums (22-min drive), where Hawaiian meets American in the form of omelettes, sandwiches, and burgers. Their kiawe/guava wood smoked BBQ dinners make for a special treat.

If you’re looking to get a little more rowdy while enjoying a cocktail, you’ll want to stop by South Shore Tiki Lounge (9-min drive), where happy hour lasts all day. Seriously, it’s daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with live music from 4 to 6 p.m. each day. Even when it’s not happy hour their tiki, blended, and classic drinks are priced nicely, and the bar is a lot of fun, with drinks and DJs every night from 10 p.m. to close.

Enjoy some day drinking at the longest happy hour in Maui from 2 to 6 p.m. at Down the Hatch (40-min drive) where you’ll find tropical and craft cocktails, featuring a dedicated mule menu. Kick back at the bar where you’re likely to find locals and members of the service industry or step next door for an adult shave ice at sister company Breakwall Shave Ice Co. For a little nightlife (there’s not much in Lahaina), pop in for some late night fun as DTH hosts adult events every night at 9:30 p.m. including trivia, DJs, and movie nights.

Though quite large, this is a lovely property with grounds that are well manicured and give a nice taste of tropical life. The easy access to Keawakapu Beach is especially helpful. Daily housekeeping is also a very nice treat at a condo property.
