Fodor's Expert Review The Kapalua Villas Maui

2000 Village Rd., Kapalua, Hawaii, 96761, USA See on Map

Set among the 22,000 sprawling acres of the Kapalua Resort, these posh condominiums are named for their locations: the Golf Villas line the fairways of Kapalua's Bay Golf Course; the Ridge Villas are perched along a cliff overlooking the ocean, and the Bay Villas are at the water's edge. The one-, two-, and three-bedroom units are all fully furnished with kitchens and washers and dryers. "Gold Villas" designate units that have newly refurbished kitchens, baths, and decor, and typically cost $70–$120 more per night. The $35 resort fee for all units includes Wi-Fi, parking, preferred tee times, and free shuttle to shopping, dining, and activities within the resort.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Mandatory extra charges can add up here, with a $35 per day resort fee and cleaning costs ranging from $225 to $300 (increasing in 2020). If you want daily cleaning, that will be an additional cost ranging from $55 to $225.

Condos range in size from one- to three-bedrooms, with views that include oceanfront, ocean view, and fairway view. Each unit is roomy and includes full kitchen, washer/dryer, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning. Decor is typically an elegant version of island decor with contemporary furnishings and appliances, though each are decorated by their individual owner.

There are stairs throughout the property and in some of the units. Those with mobility issues may want to call and ensure the unit is easily accessible.

Bathrooms differ by unit, but are typically large and luxurious, with lots of natural elements, and a large vanity.

The lobby at Kapalua Villas is fairly unremarkable--efficient, with a recessed reception desk and seated activities desk. The Kapalua Logo Shop is attached.

There are multiple pools at the villas, one for each section, including one rectangular puzzle piece shaped and shaped like an arrow head.

The actual villas do not have their own dining option, but there are 11 restaurants in the Kapalua Resort where the villas are located.

Getting Around

It’s easy (and preferable) to explore Maui’s smaller towns by foot, but to get to them and around the island, you’ll need to rent a car. If you plan on exploring the Road to Hana, get something with a little extra horsepower (but not too big as the road can get very narrow). Self-parking is available directly at each villa, and there is a shuttle that takes guests around within the resort.

Star Noodle (20-min drive) is a favorite among locals and visitors, a place where creative chefs integrate new ideas into old dishes. The family-style concept is applied to the tasty plates that illustrate a Maui twist on Asian classics. Fish, pork, and of course noodles dominate the menu, but there are definitely plenty of veggie options, along with vibrant cocktails and mocktails made with fresh-pressed juices.

Enjoy fine dining while practically sitting in the ocean and relaxing with the sea turtles at Mala Ocean Tavern (17-min drive)--this restaurant is so close to the water that at some tables you can feel the surf splashing your toes. The fresh, vibrant menu is not only full of locally-sourced items and lots of fish, it also features a gluten-free menu. Wine choices are fantastic, as are the cocktails with a few special martini options.

Find a daily happy hour from 5 to 6 p.m., live music from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday through Monday, and trivia nights on Wednesday at family-friendly Pour House (3-min walk) that features cocktails, beer, and an extensive wine list.

Monkeypod (15-min drive) has some really great food, with a focus on local products that create a variety of appetizers, pizzas, noodles, salads, and seafood dishes in a fun, family-friendly environment. Their newest location in Whaler’s Village has two daily happy hours from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and 9 to 11 p.m., as well as live music most days--performances start at 1, 4, and 7 p.m.

These spacious, well appointed condos make a great option for those looking for a family or group vacation or those looking for a longer stay. Views are stunning, and though there aren’t many amenities directly at the villas, Kapalua Resort offers up a wide variety of amenities, and the free shuttle makes it easy to get around.
