Fodor's Expert Review Maui Ocean Breezes

240 N. Holokai Rd., Haiku-Pauwela, Hawaii, 96708, USA See on Map

The cool ocean breeze rolls through these pretty, eco-friendly rentals, making this a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the gorgeous scenery along the ocean side of the famed Road to Hana. The interior design is whimsical, with murals of underwater scenes in most rooms; a man-made waterfall feeds the saltwater pool, and there's a meditation hut. Fully equipped kitchens and Wi-Fi make these studio, one- and two-bedroom units an ideal home away from home. Allergy-prone travelers can rest easy: no chemicals or pesticides are used on the property. Totally surrounded by nature, you are only 10 minutes from Haiku Town and 15 minutes from Hookipa Beach and Paia town.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The cleaning fee for each unit is quite high -- be sure to ask about it up front and factor it in when budgeting.

These vacation rentals offer a variety of accommodations, including a cottage, apartment, studio, and retreat (upper level of the plantation home). Guests can also rent the entire property for large family or group get togethers. Each unit comes with king bed, kitchen or kitchenette, and free wifi (with laptop provided) and lots of fun, cheerful decor and paint.

The units at this B&B seem to be particularly prone to attracting ants. If purchasing food for your unit, even snacks, grab some containers or bags to store them in so you don’t have to fight an uphill battle.

Bathrooms differ based on unit, but some include jacuzzi tub. The fun decor extends from the units into each bathroom, making them bright and funky.

Guests arrive to a circular driveway and a sign to ring the bell upon arrival. Hosts then come to greet guests and take them to their accommodations.

The 40-foot salt water pool includes a lovely waterfall feature and nearby gazebo, surrounded by a sun deck and manicured lawns. The pool is closed in by an iron fence, making the space even safer for children.

Getting Around

It’s easy (and preferable) to explore Maui’s smaller towns by foot, but to get to them and around the island, you’ll need to rent a car. If you plan on exploring the Road to Hana, get something with a little extra horsepower (but not too big as the road can get very narrow).

If you’re looking to eat more like a local, Da Kitchen (28-min drive) is the place to dine. Their menu includes fun versions of Hawaiian favorites like fried Spam musubi, chicken katsu sandwich served with potato mac salad, traditional plate lunches, and loco mocos. Most of these make great meals to-go, so grab a plate and head to the beach for a picnic!

Kula Lodge and Restaurant (35-min drive) is a wonderfully romantic upcountry spot. It’s got stunning views, and serves a Hawaiian-heavy menu at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with the only full-service bar in Kula. The garden terrace is the special occasion spot at the lodge, nestled amongst the trees at 3000 feet above sea level, with a wood-burning pizza oven and open-air views.

If you’re looking for a really fun happy hour, you’ll want to stop by Milagros (17-min drive) you’ll likely need a good drink upon your return from Hana). Not only is their happy hour a good three hours long (from 3 to 6 p.m.), but it is CHEAP -- $5 house margaritas, mai tais, and wine, along with $4 beers and $6 menu items make it one of the best priced options on the island.

The nightlife is bustling at Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon (16-min drive), where music happens every night of the week. Restaurant by day and night, after 10 p.m. it’s a drink-slinging good time, with beer, wine, and a full bar. The daily happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. offers up some great prices along with discounted food, as well.

Set in a unique location on the island, staying at the B&B allows visitors easy access to get on the road to Hana easily, and to explore the island from a different perspective. Serene and relaxing, we love that it has such a fun and funky personality throughout, that it’s eco-friendly, and that it welcomes children.
