Kamaole Sands

2695 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, Hawaii, 96753, USA

This south Kihei property is a good choice for active families, with its swimming pool, tennis courts, and an ideal family beach (Kamaole III) just across the street. Ten four-story buildings wrap around 15 acres of grassy slopes with a swimming pool, a small waterfall, and barbecues. Condos with one to three bedrooms are equipped with modern conveniences, but there's a relaxed, almost retro feel to the place. All units have two bathrooms, kitchens, laundry facilities, and private lanai. All buildings look the same, so remember a landmark to find your unit.

Be sure to do your research on the individual units, both online and by calling the booking line, to ensure that you get a unit that is to your liking. Some have more modern amenities and decor than others.

These vacation condos range in size from one- to three-bedroom, each fully furnished and air conditioned with private lanai. Most of the units come with a lovely view that includes garden, ocean, and mountain views. As these are individually owned, the decor and furnishings in each differ in each unit.

YOU SHOULD KNOW These condos do not have central air, rather they use window or individual room units that are mostly in the living room. This sometimes results in a warm night’s sleep in the hotter months.

Bathrooms are an average size, some with standing showers, others with shower/tub combos. Decor and fixtures are based on the owners’ preferences. Each bathroom is stocked with Hydro Basics toiletries.

The lobby at Kamaole Sands is bright and airy, with light paint and wood colors and a skylight that brings in natural light. There is some seating, as well as travel brochures, a small computer area, and a recessed reception desk.

The somewhat large, puzzle piece shaped pool is surrounded by a tiled sun deck and lots of loungers. Nearby the pool guests will also find a kiddie tub and hot tub.

The fitness center is a bit outdated, but it has a good assortment of cardio and weight machines. There are also tennis courts for guests to use.

Getting Around

It’s easy (and preferable) to explore Maui’s smaller towns by foot, but to get to them and around the island, you’ll need to rent a car. If you plan on exploring the Road to Hana, get something with a little extra horsepower (but not too big as the road can get very narrow). Guests can enjoy free parking in a secured lot.

Find casual, beachy fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Beach Bums (21-min drive), where Hawaiian meets American in the form of omelettes, sandwiches, and burgers. Their kiawe/guava wood smoked BBQ dinners make for a special treat.

Dining at The Mill House (22-min drive) should top any Maui itinerary, giving guests the chance to enjoy innovative, beautiful, locally sourced dishes. Add to the food a variety of fun cocktails and a massive wine list all wrapped up with clever, beautiful styling, and it’s hard to pull yourself away. An extensive happy hour from 2 to 5 p.m. gives guests the chance to try a variety of small plates and drinks. The views of the clouds wisping by the west Maui mountains and the fun duck pond off the patio makes the dining experience even more special.

Though it may not be as popular as another Hawaiian brewing company, Maui Brewing Co. (8-min drive) deserves every bit as much respect, especially since it’s still local. Its newest brewery, tasting room, and pub in Kihei is super sleek and fun. Drop in for a brewery tour or grab a seat at the massively long bar and try out some of their seasonal beers that are only available at the brewery. Be sure to grab a crowler or growler to enjoy those special flavors during the rest of your trip.

Three’s Bar and Grill (6-min drive) has an insane happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. and 9 to 10 p.m. (in the Surf Lounge) that includes pupus and raw bar selections alongside $3.75 well drinks, $4 14oz beers, and margaritas and mai tais for $3.75 (with the option to upgrade to top shelf for $6.75). It’s a laid back, good time that you’ll want to have nearly every day of your vacation.

The property is very lovely, featuring landscaped tropical plants and (ocean views), along with waterfalls and freshwater ponds. The location is great, right across from one of Maui’s best beaches and within quick walking and driving distance to other lovely beaches and plenty of dining options.
