Volcano Hale

Why We Like It

It’s always great to have modestly priced options for travelers, and this cozy spot is comfortable, clean, and a great way to meet other Big Island visitors.

Fodor's Expert Review

Volcano Hale walks the line between a hostel and a hotel, with five private rooms and two shared bathrooms in a house surrounded by rainforest. It is one of the most affordable lodging options in the Volcano area, giving guests both privacy and the opportunity to get to know other travelers.

Room

Guest rooms differ based on size of the bed, ranging from full to king. The rooms are cozy and decent in size, and also quite outdated in décor, making these accommodations best for active travelers who are just looking for a place to lay their head.

You Should Know There are a lot of stairs throughout the building, so anyone with mobility issues might want to try the single-level rooms at nearby sister property Lokahi Lodge.

Bathroom

Shared bathrooms are in the process of being upgraded to give guests a little more of a luxurious, updated feel.

Tip There is one bathroom on each of the three floors, so on that rare instance that your floor is occupied and you just can’t wait, pop onto one of the other floors.

Lobby

Because it is limited service, guests need to check in at Chalet Kilauea, a 2 minute drive away.

Dining

There is no on-site restaurant, but guests have access to a shared kitchen and common space.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

You will need a rental car to get around the Volcano area and the island.

Restaurants

A great spot for grab and go breakfast or lunch is Eagles Lighthouse Café (3-minute drive) for both standard lighter fare and more Hawaiian leaning dishes like a fried rice breakfast bowl. If you’re headed into Hilo, Hawaiian Style Café (40-minute drive) has great food that will fill you up (and maybe leave you with leftovers if you order their giant pancakes) for a good price.

Bars

Go to Lava Lounge at the Kilauea Military Camp (9-minute drive) for no nonsense cocktails at great prices, as well as occasional live music. For a little more upbeat, but still laid back night life with live music, mostly Kona Brewery beers on tap and a standard bar full of liquor, Hilo Town Tavern (45-minute drive) is your best bet for rubbing elbows with locals at this semi-dive bar that has live music, sports on a few screens, and a couple of pool tables.
