Fodor's Expert Review Paniolo Greens

68-1745 Waikoloa Rd, Waikoloa Village, HI 96738 See on Map

If you’re looking for a comfortable location to easily access the north part of the Big Island, this Waikoloa Village timeshare resort makes a good choice. It offers 162 furnished condos surrounded by stunning mountains and rolling green hills, a 15-minute drive to the nearest beach. On-site amenities include free beach equipment, swimming pool, children’s pool, fitness center, tennis court, and hot tub, as well as a few weekly activities like yoga, hula, and some kids activities. The Waikoloa Village Golf Course is adjacent to the resort.

Various suite and villa options are available, based on the size of your party, with the largest single unit holding up to 7 people. Each unit is individually decorated, but most maintain an island feel in their décor.

If you’re looking for a quiet vacation, get a unit on the upper floors. The floors in the units are pretty thin and footsteps fall loudly. Just keep in mind that there are no elevators.

The number of large bathrooms, many with shower/tub combos, vary based on the type of unit.

Guests check-in at a bright lobby inside one of the buildings, with a small activities desk and racks of pamphlets with nearby activities.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Check-in times are a little later than average (4 p.m.) and check-out times are a little earlier than average (10 a.m.).

Nice landscaping and plenty of seating make the rectangular pool and surrounding area very inviting for guests. A small kid’s pool is attached and the hot tub is a few feet away.

Near the pool guests can find both a fitness center and tennis courts for vacation exercising.

Getting Around

You will need a car to get to your accommodations and around the island.

Pueo’s Osteria (9-minute walk) offers farm to table Italian-inspired fare that, while it isn’t what you’d think of as Hawaiian food, includes some local favorites like Hamakua mushrooms and lilikoi cheesecake. A lovely wine menu and a late night happy hour with limited food menu for night owls from 9:30 p.m. to midnight make this a great spot to wine and dine. Heavy on the seafood and its specialty cold bar featuring oysters, lobster, and shrimp, The Blue Room Brasserie and Bar (13-minute) marries the traditional French brasserie with island flavors. The inspiration for the décor is the reception room at Iolani Palace, the royal home of the Hawaiian monarchy.

Sample a variety of beers by the flight or pint, along with pub bites, at Big Island Brewhaus (24-minute drive). The bar at Lava Lava Beach Club (15-minute drive) is a favorite drinking destination, with delicious and strong cocktails (the “Big Bamboocha” will definitely get your vacation started well) and a nice wine menu coupled with beautiful beachy, ocean views.

Though not directly in or near any of the island’s major towns, this property is in a unique setting and makes a great location to branch out to a variety of areas across the northern part of the Big Island. The accommodations are large and affordable and make great options for groups. The flock of turkeys that live on property are also a fun and unique treat that guests really enjoy.
