Jacaranda Inn

65-1444 Kawaihae Rd., Waimea (Hawaii County), Hawaii, 96743, USA

Fodors.com

While the historical Jacaranda Inn may not always live up to its potential, this sprawling estate, built in 1897 and once the home of the manager of Parker Ranch, provides a unique lodging option for visitors who appreciate history. Rooms are decorated in hues of raspberry and lavender, with lots of koa wood accents. Most rooms have jacuzzi tubs. A separate nearby cottage, with stone fireplace, sleeps six.

room

Eight rooms and one cottage come in all different shapes and sizes in this inn. Décor and furnishings are all very dated, which may be a turn off for younger travelers, but most are very spacious and comfortable.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The rooms and common areas have a musty smell due to the area’s climate as well as the older furniture. If you’re sensitive to smells, this probably isn’t the best choice.

bathroom

Each bathroom is different, but six of the eight rooms have jacuzzi tubs and are very large.

lobby

The lobby is a reception office just off of the common area in the main house. These areas also have a very dated feel to them, but are welcoming and comfortable.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Wi-fi is not available in the rooms but is accessible in the common area and on the lovely front porch.

Though the front of the inn is beautiful, be sure to spend time exploring the back. Views of the rolling, green hills are one of the best things about Waimea, and the inn has them in spades.

LOCATION

Getting Around

You’ll need a rental car to get around the Big Island and into Waimea for dining and shopping.

Restaurants

Happy hour and dinner await at Redwater Café where you can enjoy live music (Thursday through Saturday) while dining on a variety of multicultural dishes. A menu that ranges from barbeque to poke nachos and a bit in between make The Fish and the Hog a popular place to grab a bite and a beer (3 minute drive).

Bars

Sample a variety of beers by the flight or pint at Big Island Brewhaus (6 minute drive) or find a quality wine menu and limited but unique cocktail menu using fresh island ingredients at Merriman’s (2 minute drive).

WHY WE LIKE IT

The grounds of the property, which are made up of 12 acres, are absolutely stunning, as is the purple Jacaranda tree out front that gives the inn its name. And though it seems a bit stuck in the past, the inn does have a lot of history to celebrate, including its history as Laurance Rockefeller's private home that often hosted celebrities like Jacqueline Kennedy and Henry Kissinger.
