Fodor's Expert Review Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village

78-7190 Kaleiopapa St., Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, 96740, USA See on Map Fodor's Choice

Tucked away by Keauhou Bay amid a plethora of coconut trees, this well-maintained enclave of blue-roofed villas offers lots of amenities, including an 11-court tennis center (with a center court, pro shop, and lights), swimming pools, hot tubs, fitness center, manicured gardens, waterfalls, and covered parking. Guests are minutes away from the island's best snorkel cruise, plus the many dining and grocery options at nearby Keauhou Shopping Center.

This resort offers bell service, so take advantage of it, especially when lugging groceries and luggage from the parking garage that’s in the center of the property.

There are 73 one- and two- bedroom villas in two-story buildings on this vacation rental property, each with private patio or lanai and full kitchen. The décor in and around each villa is bright, friendly, and brings in a lot of island charm.

Bathrooms vary based on the type of accommodations that you choose, but most are spacious and include bathtub/shower combos.

The comfortable indoor lobby at the tennis center is spacious and includes some bamboo seating and a small activities desk.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Check-in times are a little later than average (4 p.m.) and check-out times are a little earlier than average (10 a.m.).

There are six pools and six hot tubs on the property, including a kiddie pool.

In addition to a small fitness room with basic cardio and weight equipment, there is an 11-court tennis facility.

Getting Around

You’ll need a car to get to your accommodations and around the island.

Rays on the Bay (3-minute drive) has tranquil ocean views, lovingly crafted local dishes from the land, ocean, and gardens, and a really incredible ahi poke stack that makes for a perfect start to your meal. Strawberry Patch (12-minute drive) has a variety of fresh fare that includes curries, salads, and pastas. Not only do they have dinner service, but they also offer picnic basket service.

TJ’s Pau Hana Hale (17-minute drive) is a new sports bar getting lots of love by locals, particularly because TJ is such a nice guy and makes a mean Old Fashioned. Get drinks and a show at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar (18-minute drive), an open-air jazz bar with great beer and wine selections, plus a few decadent desser-tinis to complement their cocktail list.

The blue-roofed villas and abundance of coconut trees really help transport guests to a tropical location, aided by beautifully manicured grounds and water elements throughout. Its proximity to locales in South Kona and Captain Cook make it a great base location.
