Fodor's Expert Review The Birchwood

340 Beach Dr. NE, St. Petersburg, Florida, 33701, USA

Few things are as emblematic of Beach Drive's renaissance as this boutique hotel, which like many of downtown St. Pete's best attractions, seamlessly blends old and new. The former apartment building's 1924 facade was lovingly restored by developer Chuck Prather, who also dramatically renovated its interior. The decor and furnishings also blend the old with the new—think Edison bulb chandeliers in the ballroom and European claw-foot bathtubs as well as glass-door showers with rain-shower heads in the bathrooms; you'll find luxurious canopy beds in most rooms. Some rooms have views of Beach Drive and the banyan-spotted waterfront parks that skirt downtown, but all guests—as well as nonguests—can take advantage of the view at Canopy, the Birchwood's überhip nightlife spot. The hotel's ground-floor restaurant Birch & Vine is also worth noting; it's been getting the attention of local foodies since it opened. Note: ADA-compliant room Nos. 208 and 308 don't have bathtubs, one of the coolest design features.

  • service seems more like a B&B than a hotel and sometimes staff is MIA
