Fodor's Review

Although the antique shop space within the bungalow-style café is now history, this 45-seat comfort-food haven, with full bar, remains embellished with reminders of the past, from a 1950s-era wooden wall phone to a metal icebox and a Coca-Cola machine. A mounted jackalope oversees a wide menu of blue-plate specials (Homestead crab cakes, burgers, fried chicken, meat loaf). You'll also find a fish of the day, the "Art of Chicken," and specialties like Romanian tenderloin (skirt steak cooked to order). Vegetarians often go for the fresh-grilled veggies over angel-hair pasta. Best of all, fare includes potatoes mashed, salt-crusted, baked, and stuffed with sour cream and cheddar. Layer cakes, pies, and cobblers provide a sweet finish. Dine inside or at picnic tables under a covered patio, but don't count on separate checks. To-go items cost 50¢ extra.
