Hyatt Place Orlando/Convention Center

8741 International Dr., Orlando, Florida, 32819, United States

Youngish, high-tech-consuming business travelers and vacationing families find value here because of the location and amenities, such as 42-inch flat-panel HDTVs, work areas with computer access panel, wet bar with minifridge and heated pool. While it's three blocks from the Convention Center, it's also just a block from Pointe Orlando, a restaurant, movie theater, and shopping complex, and it's near the new shopping and entertainment area at the Orlando Eye. Like other Hyatt Places, this one is hooked into the 24/7 lifestyle, with a computer touch screen in the lobby restaurant from which you can order food at all hours (kitchen staff is always on duty) and a 24-hour fitness center.

YOU SHOULD KNOW No kids programs or baby-sitting services. Though the address of the hotel is International Drive, the sign is very small and hard to see, because it indicates a driveway that leads to the hotel, whose main parking entrance is on Universal Blvd.

Rooms are painted in neutral colors with spare, modern, wood trim, and the beds (two doubles or a king) are signature Hyatt Grand beds with white, duvet style bedding. The sitting area, called the “Cozy Corner” features a pull-out bed and is an ideal place for watching TV or for pets to sleep. Rooms include a 42” flat screen TV, a mini-fridge, coffeemaker, free Wi-Fi, a work station, a Hyatt Plug Panel for charging.

Pack light, as there's a self-service laundry on site.

The vanity is separate from the bathroom proper, and has a separate counter space for toiletries. The bathroom features a tub/shower combination, and KenetMD™ luxury skin and hair care products are provided.

The lobby features a check-in counter and a dining area where free breakfast is served each morning. Public computers are available for guest use.

The heated pool is nothing fancy, but ideal for a quick dip or sunbathing. There is towel service available, and plenty of lounge chairs.

The sun is blocked from the pool in the afternoon, so get your sunbathing in early.

No spa

The gym is open 24-hours-a-day and features cardio equipment and free weights. The hotel will supply towels, water, and earbuds upon request.

A free, hot breakfast is offered every morning with eggs, bacon, breakfast breads and yogurt among the offerings. The 24/7 Gallery Menu features foods that can be ordered for lunch and dinner, and the 24/7 Gallery Market is available for quick carry-out snacks and drinks. The Coffee to Cocktails Bar, as you would imagine, offers coffee and cocktails as well as beer and wine.

There is no formal bar at this lodging, however you can order drinks at the Coffee to Cocktails Bar, which doubles as the check-in counter

Getting Around

The hotel offers no theme-park shuttles and it's too far to walk to the Convention Center, but the I-Ride Trolley offers reasonably priced transportation up and down International Drive, as does the public bus system, Lynx (bus stops are marked with a sign with a lynx paw). Taxis and ride-share services are readily available. If you have your own car, or a rental, parking is free at the hotel, but there's a $20 fee to park at Universal, unless you go after 6pm, when it's free.

Pointe Orlando (5-minute drive) is home to dozens of restaurants, including The OceanAir Seafood Room, where seafood is king; Capital Grille, a classic chop and steakhouse; the atmospheric Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar. Farther along I-Drive, The Boston Lobster Feast (8-minute drive) is exactly what its name implies, an all you can eat seafood feast, including lobster. Look for the giant, red lobster consuming a small car. Shake Shack (10-minute drive) is a popular American burger spot. I-Drive offers dozens of chain eateries serving everything from burgers to pizza to tacos to American home-style comfort food.

International Drive offers more places to down a pint or sip tequila than you could visit in a week, and best of all you don't have to drive, as the I-Ride Trolley or ride-sharing services are available. Hooter's I-Drive, Senor Frog's and TGI Fridays are only steps away from the hotel. For an evening of Latin dancing, live revue shows, and creative cocktails, check out Mango’s, (5-minute drive).

If your destination is the Orange County Convention Center, this is only a couple of minutes drive away, and Universal and CityWalk, Pointe Orlando and I-Drive 360 entertainment aren't that much further, so the location is excellent. The amenities are fairly basic, but that is offset by the freebies: no resort fee, free parking, free Wi-Fi, and free breakfast.
