Fodor's Expert Review Essex Steam Train and Riverboat

Essex Transportation Site (Airport, Bus, Ferry, Train) Fodor's Choice

This ride offers some of the best views of the Connecticut River valley from 1920s-era coaches pulled by a vintage steam locomotive and an old-fashioned riverboat. The train, traveling along the Connecticut River through the lower valley, makes a 12-mile round-trip from Essex Station to Deep River Station; from there, if you wish to continue, you board the riverboat for a ride to East Haddam (the open promenade deck on the third level has the best views). The train also hosts seasonal events such as the North Pole Express, a nighttime trip to pick up Santa, and Day Out with Thomas, perfect for little ones who love the Thomas & Friends television show.
