Fodor's Expert Review Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area
Explore hiking trails and view Native American rock art in this 210,000-acre conservation area. You can also visit 19th-century homesteads, one of which was built by Captain H.A. Smith. His stone cabin, built into the side of a boulder, has a hollowed-out slab for a bed and a smaller niche carved out of the stone wall to hold a bedside pistol. And don't miss 1,300-foot-deep Escalante Canyon, which harbors the Escalante Potholes, a popular swimming and wading spot.
