Getting Oriented

.

  • Moraine Park. This area offers easy access to several trailheads, the park's largest campground, and the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center near the east side entrance.
  • Bear Lake. One of the park's most photographed places is the hub for many trailheads and a stop on the park’s shuttle service.
  • Longs Peak. The park's highest (and toughest to climb) peak, this Fourteener pops up in many park vistas. A round-trip summit trek takes 10 to 15 hours; most visitors opt for a (still spectacular) partial journey.
  • Trail Ridge Road. Alpine tundra is the highlight here, as the road—the nation's highest continuous highway—climbs to over 12,000 feet (almost 700 feet above timberline).
  • Timber Creek. The park's far western area is much less crowded than other sections, though it has evening programs, 98 camping sites, and a visitor center.
  • Wild Basin Area. Far from the crowds, this southeastern quadrant has lovely subalpine forest punctuated by streams and lakes.
