Outside Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

While not totally out of the way, Black Canyon of the Gunnison and its two neighboring recreation playgrounds—the Curecanti National Recreation Area and the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area—are far enough removed from civilization (i.e., big cities) to maintain a sense of getting-away-from-it-all isolation. They're a good 250 miles from Denver, and 240 miles from Colorado Springs, and touristy towns such as Durango and Telluride are 120 miles and 80 miles away, respectively. Colorado National Monument is about 85 miles distant.
