A loop drive counterclockwise from the town of Ferndale, 20 miles south of Eureka, yields astounding ocean views and winds through forests and small towns before heading into Humboldt Redwoods State Park and then back up U.S. 101 toward the starting point. The road has numerous curves and some rugged stretches are in need of repair, but driving this 100-or-so-mile route is exhilarating.
Allot four hours for this excursion.
