Fodor's Review

Located 42 miles northwest of Barstow in the remote Black Mountains, Inscription has one of the world's largest collections of Native American petroglyphs and pictographs, but it is not an easy trek. Visitors need four-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicles that are meant to go off road; portions of the journey include pockets of deep sand. It's also best to avoid in the hot summer months, but no matter the season, fill the gas tank and bring plenty of water.
