Dinner at the spectacularly inventive flagship of San Francisco’s most celebrated chef of the moment, Dominique Crenn, starts with the presentation of a poem. Each course is described by a line in the poem, so the "Hidden beneath the bluffs" might be whole grilled Monterey abalone with a purée of its own liver and a grilled mussel sauce. The presentations, textures and tastes stay with diners for years after the final chocolate bite from pastry wizard Juan Contreras.
