Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Carlton

1075 Sutter St., San Francisco, California 94109, United States See on Map

International vintage aptly describes the eclectic collection of textiles, masks, globes, games, maps, postcards, and other ephemera from around the world that decorates this 1927 hotel. The hotel is five blocks from Union Square (complimentary town-car shuttle service is available to the Financial District each morning), two blocks from the California Street cable car, and one block from the eclectic shops and restaurants of Polk Street.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The property is on the northern edge of the Civic Center/Tenderloin area, which has a high transient population.

room

The simply furnished guest quarters--with ceiling fans and views from upper floors--are reminiscent of an apartment that would belong to a globe-trotting bohemian aunt. Serta mattresses and flat-screen TVs add comfort to the smallish rooms.

bathroom

Bathrooms might be smaller than the closets, but they are efficient and clean.

lobby

The welcoming lobby boasts a fireplace and daily newspapers, plus enchanting books on everything from astrology to living your destiny; a complimentary glass of wine is served here nightly.

dining

The hotel's onsite restaurant Phlox Commons showcases American cuisine for breakfast and dinner. Fried brussels sprouts, sausage flatbread and a fine burger appeal in this rustic chic spot.

drinking

Phlox Commons boasts a winning brew menu. The hotel offers a nightly wine hour in the lobby.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Parking rates are on par with the rest of the city's. Walkers will find plenty to eat and drink nearby, though the streets can get rough after dark. Muni buses stop within a block of the property, connecting travelers with downtown, Hayes Valley, the Mission and beyond. Hop on the BART train at Powell Street Station to connect with the San Francisco and Oakland Airports, the East Bay and the Mission District.

Restaurants

The award-winning Liholiho Yacht Club (5-minute walk) slings Cal-Hawaiian cuisine in a funky setting. Expect poke, kalua pork, or creative seafood dishes. You better be hungry for fried fish at the city's freshest seafood joint Swan Oyster Depot (7-minute walk)--note that this popular lunch spot gets wildly crowded.

Bars

Live music and a vast beer selection make the Hemlock Tavern (5-minute walk) a favorite for the younger crowd. If you like cocktails and video games, head over to Soda Popinski's (5-minute walk).

WHY WE LIKE IT

Funky interiors, an eclectic lobby, a fine onsite restaurant, and affordable rooms make this a crowd pleaser for budget travelers.
