Fodor's Review

More and more people from around the country are discovering this once sleepy stretch of sand thanks to the Pier South Autograph Collection hotel right on the beach. The 4-mile-long beach is a great place for long walks and bird-watching—more than 370 species can be spotted here. There are year-round lifeguards, two parks with covered picnic areas, two playgrounds, and volleyball and basketball courts. Sea 180, the restaurant at the Pier South Resort, serves Baja-Med cuisine steps from the surf. The wooden fishing pier has views of Mexico to the south and Point Loma to the north. In July the beach is the site of the Sun & Sea Festival sandcastle competition, and the Dog Surfing Competition. Amenities: lifeguards, food and drink, parking (fee), showers, toilets. Best for: surfing, swimming, walking.
