San Diego’s love affair with artisanal bread began when this artsy urban bakery and café opened its doors two decades ago. Owner Charles Kaufman, a former New Yorker and a filmmaker, gave Bread & Cie a sense of theater by putting bread ovens imported from France center stage. Inhale irresistible aromas as you choose among classic baguettes and focaccia, crusty black olive and jalapeno and cheese, or glazed bear claws and cinnamon rolls. Can’t decide? A bread plate serves up three warm slices with butter, preserves, and cream cheese. Lunchtime adds options like house-made salads, soups, and sandwiches, and for kids, a gooey peanut butter sandwich. They also offer traditional afternoon tea with sandwiches and pastries. Be prepared for lines and limited parking at peak hours.
