Sutter Creek is a charming conglomeration of balconied buildings, Victorian homes, and neo–New England structures. At any time of year Main Street (formerly part of Highway 49) is worth a stroll for its shops selling antiques and works by local artists and craftspeople. Tasting rooms of note include Bella Grace and Scott Harvey. Sites like the 19th-century water-powered Knight Foundry and Monteverde Store Museum are worth a peek if you're in town on the rare days they're open, but always accessible is the open-air Miners' Bend Historic Gold Mining Park.
Not everyone has the courage to explore these macabre destinations. Do you?More
