Outside Pinnacles National Park Travel Guide

Outside Pinnacles National Park

Soledad, at the park's western entrance, is most famous for being the setting of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, but it's also a part of the Monterey County wine region. There are many good wineries with tasting rooms within about 30 miles. Hahn, Scheid, Pessagno, and Ventana, all on the River Road Wine Trail (www.riverroadwinetrail.com), are open daily.

To the north in San Benito County is Hollister, a farming town that is fast becoming a bedroom community of San Jose. This area is not as well known for wine as is Monterey County, but you can spend a low-key afternoon visiting tasting rooms along the San Benito County Wine Trail. Most are on or near Cienega Road, just south of Hollister off Highway 25. Calera and Léal are among the wineries with tasting rooms open daily.

Popular Monterey and Carmel are a little more than an hour's drive from Pinnacles. Visiting them can enhance a park vacation.
