Fodor's Expert Review Doheny State Beach
At the south end of Dana Point, Doheny State Beach is one of Southern California's top surfing destinations, but there's a lot more to do within this 61-acre area. There are five indoor tanks and an interpretive center devoted to the wildlife of the Doheny Marine Refuge, as well as food stands, picnic facilities, and volleyball courts. Divers and anglers hang out at the beach's western end, and during low tide the tide pools beckon both young and old. The water quality occasionally falls below state standards—signs are posted if that's the case. Amenities: food and drink; lifeguards; parking; showers; toilets. Best for: partiers; sunset; surfing; swimming; walking.
