Monarch Beach Resort

1 Monarch Beach Resort, off Niguel Rd., Dana Point, California, 92629, USA

Fodor’s Expert Review

Set into a hillside, the Monarch Beach Resort's grand lobby opens to an impressive view of the ocean beyond. An update in 2016 included a remake of the main pool deck with luxury cabanas, two saline hot tubs, and tiled pool, all angled for views. On the 172 acres of grounds can also be found a private beach club, 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr.–designed golf course, two more swimming pools, and tennis courts. Rooms have views of either the golf course or the lush landscaping, and all have balconies to take advantage of the ocean breezes. The premier restaurant is Stonehill Tavern, which serves celebrated San Francisco chef Michael Mina's modern, seasonally-influenced dishes. The restaurant's wine selection is among the best along the coast, and the service is top-notch. For casual dining on the beach, check out the Monarch Bay Club, reached by a short golf cart ride.
