Fodor's Review

Carl Schroeder, one of California's hottest young chefs, draws well-heeled foodies to his creative and locally sourced California fare, much of it with an Asian influence from his time in Japan. The menu changes regularly depending upon what's fresh, but might include carrot-ginger soup or crispy duck confit with candied kumquats. Schroeder's seasonally inspired dishes have a playful spirit, whether it's a blue cheese soufflé with seasonal fruit, a burrata salad with purple heirloom tomatoes, or miso-glazed cod with ramen noodles and snap pea tempura. For a forks down, hands up, full surrender to culinary talent, try his signature Cabernet-braised prime beef shortribs. A well-edited wine list offers food-friendly wines by the best and brightest winemakers around the world. Desserts are exquisite, such as the strawberry crepes or the chocolate butterscotch tasting. Schroeder's newly released Market Restaurant + Bar Cookbook is available for purchase at Market.
