Fodor's Review

Superior estate Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir are Trefethen's trademark. To find out how well they age—and what Napa Valley Pinot Noir from grapes grown north of the Carneros district tastes like—pay for the reserve tasting, which includes pours of limited-release wines and one or two older vintages. The terra-cotta-color historic winery on-site, built in 1886, was designed with a gravity-flow system, with the third story for crushing, the second for fermenting the resulting juice, and the first for aging. The wooden building, whose ground floor served for years as the tasting room, suffered severe damage in the 2014 Napa earthquake. After major renovations, it reopened in 2017. The winery's appointment-only tastings also take place at the early-1900s Arts and Crafts–style Villa Trefethen.
