Fodor's Review

This winery whose name means "buddies" in French makes Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Syrahs. Although Copain occupies an enviable slope in northern Sonoma County—one that begs guests to sit, sip, and take in the Russian River Valley view—for years most of its wines derived from grapes grown in hillside vineyards near the coast in Monterey and Mendocino counties. Wells Guthrie, the winemaker and co-founder, prefers those locations for their marine climates and rocky soils; following the winery's 2016 purchase by Jackson Family Wines (Guthrie remaining as winemaker), some Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast wines are being introduced to the lineup. Tastings focus on the regions from which the winery sources its grapes, the individual vineyards, or multiple vintages of Guthrie's intuitive wines; all are by appointment only.
