Fodor's Expert Review The Farmer & the Fox
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
A Napa Valley reconception of a British gastropub and an instant hit since its 2014 debut, this pubby-clubby restaurant has already acquired an appealingly lived-in patina. Chef Joseph Humphrey, whose Wine Country resume includes Meadowood's restaurant and Auberge du Soleil, immediately wins over diners with clever appetizers such as smoked duck wings with blue cheese and lamb tartare on brioche chips. The entrées change seasonally but might include rabbit Wellington in “old school red wine sauce,” a pub steak with whiskey-peppercorn sauce and fried onions, and grilled fish in béarnaise sauce. The lack of a corkage fee draws in the locals, who can be counted on for great Wine Country gossip—especially during crush (harvesttime)—if you dine at the brass-countered bar.
