Ambrose Bierce House

1515 Main St., St. Helena, California, 94574, USA

Editor's Note: This location is reported to be under new ownership and therefore this review may contain inaccuracies.

Writer and professional curmudgeon Ambrose Bierce lived here until 1910, when he became bored with the peaceful wine valley and vanished into Pancho Villa's Mexico, never to be seen or heard from again. The vibe at his namesake inn is full-blown Victorian—floral bedspreads and white lace curtains, with century-old oak furnishings throughout—but the amenities in the four rooms are strictly up-to-date, from small satellite TVs to gleaming bathrooms, most with jetted bathtubs. If you're interested in Bierce's books, you can browse the inn's shelves. Lisa and John Runnells, the innkeepers, also run the nearby five-room Shady Oaks Country Inn.
